Categories

Categories is under Site Features in the left-hand menu. It holds the list of categories you can tag news, events, documents and other content with.

Categories are how visitors filter a long list down to what they want. They are a setup job you do once and then add to occasionally.

Adding a category

  1. Click Categories in the left-hand menu.
  2. Click Create New.
  3. Type the Title — the category name as visitors will see it.
  4. Click Save.

One field, that's it.

There is no draft. Saving is immediate.

Using them

Categories don't do anything on their own. You assign them when editing a news article, event or document — look for the Categories field on that item.

So the order is create the category first, then tag things with it. If a category isn't in the list when you're editing an article, it's because it hasn't been created yet.

How many to have

Fewer than you think. A filter with thirty options is no more useful than no filter at all — people scan a handful and give up.

Aim for something a visitor could read in one glance. If two categories nearly always get used together, they probably want to be one.

Renaming

Edit the title and save. Everything tagged with it stays tagged — you are changing the label, not the tagging.

Deleting

Deleting removes the category from everything tagged with it. The articles, events and documents are not deleted — they simply lose that tag, and drop out of that filter on the website.

Check what's using a category before removing it.

Who can do what

Admins, Editors and Authors can create and edit categories. Only Admins and Editors can delete one.
