Events

Events is under Content in the left-hand menu. It holds two kinds of event, mixed together in one list:

• events you create in the CMS
• events that arrive automatically from Tangilla

They look the same at a glance, but they behave differently, and the difference matters. This article covers both.

There is no draft for events. As soon as you click Save, the event is live on the website. If you need to work on one over several days, write the details somewhere else first and create the event when it's ready.

Creating an event

1. Click Events in the left-hand menu.
2. Click Create New.
3. Fill in the fields marked below as required.
4. Click Save.

The event is now on the website.

The event will not save until all six are filled in.

Description is optional but almost always worth writing. It's the main body of the event page.

Members only

Tick Members Only to hide the event from the public. Only signed-in members will see it.

Leave it unticked for anything you want the public to find.

Events that come from Tangilla

Some events aren't typed in by anyone here — they arrive from Tangilla automatically, on a schedule.

How to tell which is which

Open any event and look at the right-hand sidebar:

All three are read-only. You can't change them, and you don't need to.

What happens if you edit a synced event

Your change will be replaced the next time that event updates in Tangilla. Nothing breaks — the CMS simply treats Tangilla as the owner of that event's details.

So if a synced event has the wrong title, date or description, correct it in Tangilla, not here. The change flows through on the next sync.

The one thing you can safely override

Event Contact is the exception, and it's deliberate.

The sync fills it in automatically when the Tangilla instructor name matches a person in your Staff list. But you can change it, and when you do, the CMS stops overwriting it.

Underneath the field is a tick box, Contact set by hand:

• It ticks itself the moment you change the contact. You don't need to tick it.
• Once ticked, the sync leaves that contact alone permanently.
• This includes clearing it on purpose. If you empty the contact, the sync won't put one back.
• To hand control back to Tangilla, untick it. The next sync will fill the contact in again.

That's the whole mechanism: change it and it stays changed, untick to go back to automatic.

Events you create are never touched

An event you create in the CMS has Source: Manual and no Tangilla ID. The sync ignores it completely — it won't be changed, overwritten or removed.

Use this for anything Tangilla doesn't carry.

A missing event is usually not a fault

The sync never deletes anything. If an event disappears from Tangilla, its record stays here.

If an event you expected has not appeared, it's almost always because it isn't in the feed yet, or isn't the kind of event the feed sends. Check in Tangilla first, and contact support only if it's there and still missing after a sync has run.

Finding an event

The list shows Title, Start Date and when it was last updated, sorted so you can scan by date. Use the search box at the top of the list to find one by name.

Deleting an event

Deleting is permanent — there is no undo, and no draft to fall back on.

For an event that's been cancelled, consider whether people are better served by the event page staying up with the cancellation noted in the description. A page that vanishes leaves anyone holding a link with a dead end.

Deleting a Tangilla event does not remove it from Tangilla, and the next sync may bring it back. Remove it at the source instead.
