Adding a page to the site menu

Creating a page does not put it on the menu. The page exists and works, but nothing on the website links to it yet, so nobody will find it.

Menu links are managed separately, in Navigation. This article shows you how to add one.

Where the menu lives

In the left-hand menu of the CMS, click Navigation.

Everything in the header menu at the top of your website, and in the footer at the bottom, comes from this one screen. There is no separate footer list — the same items feed both, and you choose where each one appears.

Adding a link

  1. Click Navigation in the left-hand menu.
  2. Under Nav Items, click Add Item. A new row appears at the bottom of the list.
  3. Click the new row to open it.
  4. In Label, type the words you want people to see in the menu. Keep it short — one or two words fits best.
  5. Leave Type set to Internal link. This is for pages on your own website.
  6. In Document to link to, start typing the name of your page and choose it from the list.
  7. Click Save at the top of the screen.

Your link is now on the website. Open your site in a new tab and check the menu.

Choosing where the link appears

Each item has two tick boxes:

Tick box What it does
Show in Header The link appears in the menu at the top of every page
Show in Footer The link appears at the bottom of every page

Both are ticked by default, so a new link appears in both places. That is usually what you want.

Untick one when you don't:

  • Untick Show in Footer for something that only belongs at the top, like Open Houses.
  • Untick Show in Header for something that only belongs at the bottom, like Home.

If you untick both, the link disappears from the website entirely. It stays in this list, so nothing is lost — but nobody can see it.

The three kinds of link

Type changes what you're linking to.

Type Use it for What you fill in
Internal link A page on your own website Document to link to
Custom URL Another website entirely Custom URL — the full web address
File Upload A PDF or document people download Upload File

Internal link can only point to a Page, a News article, or an Event. If you want to link to something else — a document, or a page on another website — use Custom URL or File Upload instead.

Always use Internal link where you can. If the page's address ever changes, the menu link follows it automatically. A Custom URL typed by hand does not, and will quietly break.

Opening in a new tab

Tick Open in new tab to keep your website open behind the link. Use it for links to other websites. Don't use it for your own pages — it clutters people up with tabs.

Adding a drop-down

To group several links under one menu heading, use Links inside a Nav Item.

  1. Open the Nav Item you want to be the heading.
  2. Scroll to Links and click Add Item.
  3. Fill in the Label and choose what it links to, exactly as above.
  4. Repeat for each item in the drop-down.
  5. Save.

The parent item becomes a drop-down in the header and a column heading in the footer.

Reordering the menu

Drag a row by the handle on its left to move it. The order here is the order on the website, left to right in the header and top to bottom in the footer.

Click Save after dragging. Reordering is not saved automatically.

Removing a link

Click the × on the row, then Save.

This removes the link from the menu. It does not delete the page — the page is still there, and you can add the link back at any time.

If your link doesn't appear

Work through these in order:

  1. Did you click Save? The most common cause by a distance.
  2. Is Show in Header ticked? If you're looking at the top menu and it's unticked, it will only be in the footer.
  3. Is the page published? A page saved as a draft is not visible to the public. Open the page and check it says Published, not Draft.
  4. Are you looking at the live site or a preview? Refresh the page — your browser may be showing you an older copy.

If it's still missing after all four, contact support.
